Types Of Aquilaria Trees

To date, a total of 21 Aquilaria species have been documented. Of these, 13 are known to produce agarwood.

In South Asia, and particularly in India, the dominant subspecies is:

Other Species

Some of these are relatively minor species for Agarwood production.

Wild & Plantation-Grown Aquilaria Trees

Damage to Aquilaria trees can occur naturally as a result of lightning strikes, animal grazing, pests and various diseases. These events expose the inner part of the tree toward pathogenic microbes, which elicit the defence mechanism and cause the tree to begin producing resin.

Through this natural process, agarwood can take decades to develop, but its greater age tends to produce a richer fragrance; the best of the wild-grown agarwood.

However, high demand for quality agarwood has led to years of uncontrolled cutting, which almost led to the extinction of some Aquilaria species in the wild. High demand, coupled with the depletion of the wild Aquilaria tree, has driven the price of agarwood and oud ever higher.

Producers have therefore turned to a more sustainable alternative: the cultivation of Aquilaria trees in large plantations. These serve as a sustainable and more dependable source of agarwood while also protecting certain subspecies, easing global supply pressures, and improving affordability.

Abd Majid Oud is a leading supplier of agarwood, oud oil, and incense products. We specialise in this market and supply our products globally. We source products from a variety of wild and plantation-grown trees from below listed countries.
